More than two dozen diesel car models made by BMW, Chrysler, General Motors, Land Rover and Mercedes-Benz are under scrutiny as the US regulator that exposed Volkswagen’s rigging of emissions tests probes whether rival carmakers engaged in similar cheating.
The Environmental Protection Agency’s broadening search for software-based “defeat devices” that understate emissions during laboratory tests will encompass at least 28 diesel-powered models, according to a document seen by the Financial Times.
The investigations are aimed at determining whether the German carmaker was alone in rigging emissions tests or if the practice is more widespread in the industry. VW has admitted that the devices, which turn on pollution controls during lab tests, had been fitted to up to 11m vehicles worldwide, leading to the resignation of Martin Winterkorn, its chief executive.
The EPA will initially test one used vehicle of each model and then widen the probe if it uncovers anything suspicious, said a senior agency official close to the investigation.
